THE ROLE OF NATURE

The Role of Nature

We as humans most often ignore or forget that we part of nature. That nature is not something out there that is distinct from us. Therefore reconnecting with the natural world from a place of awareness of our interdependence can have significant positive impacts on the way we think about our actions and choices in life and in work.

Nature can play a significant role in personal development by providing a setting and an embodied reminder for:

  1. Relaxation and stress relief

  2. Physical activity and exercise

  3. Increased mindfulness and connection with oneself

  4. A sense of awe and wonder, leading to perspective shift

  5. Inspiration for creativity and problem-solving.

By experiencing nature without the interference of our day to day technological ‘shells’ (cellphones, tablets, other devices), individuals can improve their physical and mental well-being, which can positively impact their personal growth.

Time in Nature

Studies have shown various benefits of spending time in nature, including:

  1. Improved mood and reduced stress: Studies have shown that exposure to green spaces, such as parks or forests, can have a positive impact on stress levels, mood, and overall well-being.

  2. Increased attention and cognitive function: Studies have shown that exposure to nature can improve cognitive function and increase attention, particularly among children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

  3. Improved physical health: Spending time in nature has been linked to increased physical activity levels, improved sleep, and a decrease in the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease and obesity.

  4. Enhanced creativity and problem-solving: Exposure to nature has been linked to increased creativity, as well as improved problem-solving skills.

  5. Increased sense of community: Spending time in nature can bring people together and foster a sense of community, leading to improved social connections and relationships.

These studies suggest that the impact of spending time in nature can go beyond just physical and mental well-being and extend to various aspects of personal and community development.

Forest bathing

Forest bathing, also known as Shinrin-yoku, is a Japanese concept that involves immersing oneself in nature as a form of therapy. It involves using the senses to fully engage with the natural environment, such as smelling the forest, touching the trees, and listening to the sounds of nature.

Studies have shown that forest bathing can have a range of health benefits, including:

  1. Reduced stress and anxiety

  2. Improved mood and well-being

  3. Boosted immune system function

  4. Lower blood pressure and heart rate

  5. Increased energy and focus.

Forest bathing is seen as a way to connect with nature and re-establish our relationship with the natural world, which can have a positive impact on our overall health and well-being.
